My name is Sylvia Vo and am a graduate from San Jose State University c/o 2019 with a B.A. Mathematics Prep for Teaching degree. Based out of San Jose, I have worked students as young as 7 years old and those well into adulthood for over 10 years. From fractions to calculus, I can create a fun and engaging experience that increases confidence and curb anxiety.
From my experience, educating future generations takes patience, dedication, and enthusiasm. Building proper relationships is essential when it comes to meaningful learning. Which is why I establish a rapport asking about their experience with math and other subjects in school. I make jokes and pull from personal experience during sessions, to keep them at ease and show them that math isn't as boring and difficult as it seems.
As a first generation Vietnamese American, my parents pushed us to do well in school and go to college. In Spring 2019 I walked across the stage at the San Jose State Event Center in front of my mother, who has always supported my academic journey. It was and still is my greatest achievement today.
This scholarship meant a lot to me since I was personally recognized by my SJSU professor who I felt was just as passionate about teaching as I am. Thank you Dr. Ferguson!
While working as a barista, the math chairperson of the local high school pushed me to do math tutoring since learning of our shared passion. Through my college career, tutoring was a side gig to get me through school. Most of my clients are through referrals and word of mouth. This website is my first step in working toward a more professional and full time career. (Pictured: Me realizing I arrived 48 hours early to my first day at SJSU)
